There are more techniques when it comes to making the knot for the friendship bracelet you're starting to work on. Basically, there are four different types of knots you should work with, and I am going to show in the images below, with instructions, how to do the knots (images are from Heather's page on friendship bracelets!)
1. The forward knot - follow the instructions and you will make this forward knot.
2. Backward knot - very similar with the forward knot, this one has just slight differences on how to make it.
3. Uniting the forward and backward knot - once you get the hang of doing each knot, combining them together is easy, as in the picture above!
This type of knot for friendship bracelets is also called the "two half hitches" or "double half hitch". If the tutorial above fails to make you understand how to create that knot, here is an animated one:
